Minecraft: The Evolution of a Generation

Minecraft, more important than the game itself, is an icon that represents the gaming community and has made an incredibly unpredicted influence on pop culture. Minecraft is one of the most popular games in gaming history and has sold more than 70 million copies on PC alone. That is more than any other game in history. While time has progressed to update Minecraft into a more complex game than what it was over 10 years ago the simplicity of Minecraft has always been has made it become a success.

The mind behind Minecraft, Swedish game developer Markus Alexej Persson, now know to the gaming community as Notch, released in 2009 a version of Minecraft called "the cave". While "the cave" was no big success it was the start of something bigger. In 2010 a beat version of the game was released. By 2012 the Anvil database system was introduced in Minecraft which helped the game generate worlds much bigger and faster than it previously had. After this update Minecraft had attracted a vast amount of players and a community gathered around the game. Around this time people started to create modifications of the "vanilla" game and shared them with other players. The spread of Minecraft is also in part due to the popularity it gained on Reddit, Facebook, Twitch, but most of all, YouTube.

The success of Minecraft is also in part due to how the game accommodates many different platforms, therefore allowing for a larger community. PC, however, is one of the only ways one can download mods and enjoy Minecraft to its fullest extent. At any given time there are 1 million active players. A few years back Mojang tried something new and partnered with Telltale Game to make "Minecraft Story Mode". This spiked the popularity of the game by adding something new to a game that time was dulling.

Thanks to the popularity of the game, Minecraft might have a place in the classroom. With the near limitless creations and adventures one could have on Minecraft it allows people to express their creativity. Creative mode in Minecraft, where one has unlimited access to resources and can fly, would allow students to build a scientific model. Using Redstone, a conductive material in Minecraft, could allow students to show how electricity along with equipment that controls electricity works. In earth based sciences one could build a habit of a animal. The uses of Minecraft in the classroom are near limitless due to the creative approach the community of Minecraft has taken towards the game.
